LABRO TRAVEL GUIDE / ATHENS - A WEEKEND AWAY

Athens is much like Naples: a city full of contrast.
A culinary capital layered with marble ruins and contemporary design, where ancient history meets modern energy and everyday life unfolds between ancient columns and modern cafés.

Just 20 minutes from the sea, sunny Athens is always a good idea, though best avoided in mid-summer, when temperatures rise well above comfort and the marble streets hold the heat. The city is best experienced on foot; we easily walked up to 20,000 steps a day, wandering through narrow streets, climbing toward viewpoints, and discovering small shops and hidden courtyards along the way.

In this new series, A Weekend Away, we focus on trips in the Mediterranean, cities shaped by sun, culture, craftsmanship, and long tables where days stretch effortlessly into warm evenings.

Tips

- Stay in the historic center, where most highlights are within walking distance and the city unfolds naturally around you.
- Bring comfortable shoes, the cobblestone streets and marble paths are beautiful, but not forgiving.
- Bring some cash, as smaller stores and traditional spots do not always rely on card machines.
